Chris Armstrong
is founder and Managing Director of Information Automation Limited.
At the point that the company was formed, he was already an established
figure in the world of library and information science research having
worked for ten years as a research officer in the College of Librarianship
Wales - now known as the Department of Information Studies, University
of Wales Aberystwyth. He has continued his association with the Department
through a number of joint research projects, a course on electronic
publishing, and as Director of the International Graduate Summer School
(iGSS).
Chris Armstrong's research interests centre on electronic access to
information - online and CD-ROM databases and Internet resources -
and this is reflected in some of the company's major projects. The
Gower Publishing Company work on reviewing information CD-ROMs; the
Bowker-Saur World Databases project which resulted in a major series
of directories to electronic resources; and the work for University
Microfilms International (UMI) are all examples. In more recent years,
this work has translated into a concern for the quality of databases
and other electronic resources and has brought about both the inception
of the Centre for Information Quality Management and the continuing
work on electronic publishing in the library/information sector -
a programme of work closely linked to the company's interests in collection
development.
Chris Armstrong is a Fellow of both the Institute of Analysts and
Programmers and CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information
Professionals; he serves the latter as a national councillor. He
is also Vice-Chair of the UKeIG: the UK eInformation Group - on
whose management committee he has served for many years and whose
newsletter he edited until recently. He is a regular writer and
editor and has a number of recent monographs, reports and articles
to his name.
