Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA), May 24-28 2004, and May 29-June 3 2006, Dubrovnik and Mljet, Croatia

The LIDA Conference and Course began in 2000 to address the changing and challenging environment for libraries and information systems and services in the digital world, with an emphasis on examining contemporary problems, advances and solutions. Each year a different theme is addressed. Link to LIDA Web site.

In 2003, Ray Lonsdale and Chris Armstrong presented a paper, Establishing a strategy for the provision and use of e-books in UK academic libraries.

As in 2004, for the 2006 conference, IAL is offering a Workshop based on the theme: "Digital Books for Digital Libraries: Issues surrounding the collection management of e-books"

The workshop is based on the short IAL e-books workshop. Following an introduction and short demonstration, delegates are invited to examine a range of e-books (reference, textbooks, literature and fiction, and reading schemes) while considering the following issues:

  • Management implications for library
    • Where and how this offers more than a paper-book
    • Finding out about the existence of e-books
    • Selection policy
    • Acquisition
    • Licensing
    • Facilitating access within the library/institution/authority
    • Hardware and/or networking to accommodate e-books
    • Evaluating use
    • Promotion in the institution
    • Archiving
    • Other
  • Use
    • Teaching and learning / Curriculum
      • Virtual or Managed Learning Environments
    • Reference use
    • Recreational use
    • Need for research into usage

The session ends with a short plenary session.
